A house at the edge
of the cloud forest.
San José del Pacífico sits high on the spine of the Sierra Sur, where the clouds move through the pines and the nights turn cold.
Casa Xhen is a handful of solar-first cabins here — warm, quiet, exactly far enough from everything. Xhen means smoke in Zapotec. The hand-built clay stove at the center of the property is the reason for the name — and, on select nights, the reason you drive up the mountain.

SMOKED IN CLAY
On select nights, Casa Xhen lights the clay stove for a single table. Smoke rises through the earth of the chamber and flavors everything it touches.
It once cooked for eighty. Now, a few nights, it cooks for you and your group. What comes out is a blend of who we are: Regio, Texan, and Veracruzan borrowing from the Oaxacan pantry.

WHAT THE RAIN BRINGS UP
When the rains come, the mountain offers us mushrooms. Walk out with us in the wet pines to forage the fungi — then come back and let us cook breakfast for you.
This table leans Veracruzano: where Spanish, Native Mexican, African, and French cuisine all landed and stayed. Picaditas, quesadillas de hongos, and mole from Naolinco — another mountain town, in central Veracruz.

Up the mountain,

San José del Pacífico sits halfway: about 2.5 hours from Oaxaca de Juárez and 2.5 hours from the coast — a slow climb through several ecosystems to roughly 2,500 metres. We'll send directions and the last stretch when you book.
